The hallmarks of aging refer to the biochemical changes that occur during biological aging in all living organisms. These hallmarks were first described in a landmark 2013 paper, which aimed to explain the fundamental mechanisms underlying biological aging.

Although we cannot prevent getting older, we can reduce the effects of biological aging, which is the internal process that produces the symptoms of aging. This means that we can be one age chronologically and another age internally. Currently, we are in a significant moment in time, where we can redefine the intersection of age and health. Functional Medicine provides an excellent framework for preventing and treating diseases, with the added benefit of reducing the aging process.

While there are several areas of our lives that we can optimize for optimal health and longevity, food has the most significant impact. We consume several pounds of food every day, and this acts as information for our cells, influencing DNA expression. We must learn how to provide our bodies with the correct instructions through food, while also avoiding certain foods that can harm cellular renewal and function.

The nine hallmarks of aging are distinct common pathways or mechanisms of aging. Each hallmark is interdependent on the others and is influenced by various imbalances, including too much or too little of specific inputs. Understanding these interactions and interconnections is the key to addressing the puzzle of aging.

The primary hallmarks of aging (causes of cellular damage) are genomic instability, telomere attrition, epigenetic alterations, and loss of proteostasis. The antagonistic hallmarks, on the other hand, are responses to the primary hallmarks, which include deregulated nutrient-sensing, mitochondrial dysfunction, cellular senescence, stem cell exhaustion, and altered intercellular communication. Finally, the integrative hallmarks are the functional result of the previous two groups of hallmarks, which lead to further operational deterioration associated with aging.
